The Swiss Ornithological Institute is a non-profit foundation dedicated to ornithology and the protection of birds. It monitors native birds, researches their way of life and advocates for threatened species. It looks after injured and orphaned birds, provides information and advice to the public, and runs a visitor center in Sempach. The Swiss Ornithological Institute currently has over 200 employees in all parts of the country.
The unit Population Biology investigates how changes in demographic processes (survival, reproductive success, dispersal) affect population development and which ecological factors influence them. The study of population change is complex because it is influenced by many extrinsic and intrinsic factors that are usually only partially observable. A second focus of the department is therefore the development and dissemination of statistical models that enable such studies.
Funded by a grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Population Biology Unit is looking from 1st of December 2025 or upon agreement, for a
Post-doctoral researcher in mathematical-statistical population modeling (100%)
Your tasks
You will develop statistical reaction-diffusion or similar models based on citizen-science data from ornitho, eBird or similar databases. A focus of ecological interest will be in the modeling of the dispersal process in avian populations. This is a collaborative project with the group of Trevor Hefley at Kansas State University.Your profile
A completed or soon to be completed PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, or a related field such as data science or quantitative ecology is required. The job will require combining computational algorithms from applied mathematics (e.g., finite element methods, finite difference approximations), statistical estimation algorithms (e.g., MCMC), and geographic information systems. The successful candidate will have experience or interest in learning about Bayesian statistical models, partial differential equations, and quantitative ecology. A key requirement is the ability and willingness to publish good papers and thus to contribute to the scientific literature in both mathematics/statistics and in ecology. A solid grounding in population ecology as well as some GIS skills will be a big plus.We offer
We offer a diverse position with a lot of responsibilities in a diversified work environment. Furthermore, we offer family-friendly and flexible working hours, good opportunities for further education and exemplary social benefits. This job is limited to two years. Workplace is Sempach. Are you interested?
The Swiss Ornithological Institutes values diversity of staff. We therefore consider all qualified applications. Further information can be provided by Marc Kéry, deputy head of the Population Biology Unit.
